Overview
The Honorary Consulate-General of the Republic of Namibia in Sydney is the only Namibian consular presence in Australia and the practical first-contact point for Australian residents engaging with Namibia — Australian tourists planning the long flight via Doha or Johannesburg, Australian companies looking at Namibian mining and renewables, and Namibian citizens living in Australia who need first-line consular assistance. The Honorary Consul-General is Mr Antonio Gelonesi, appointed in July 2008. The post operates with the limited authority of an honorary consulate — Namibian passports, full Holiday Visa processing and notarial acts are not performed here — and routes substantive consular casework to the High Commission for the Republic of Namibia in Kuala Lumpur, the closest resident Namibian diplomatic mission, or to the Namibian Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation directly.
Visa Services
Australian passport holders are on Namibia's Visa on Arrival list, so the standard route for tourism is the Namibian Ministry of Home Affairs e-Services portal: complete the online application, pay the N$1,600 fee electronically, print the approval and present it at a designated Namibian port of entry. The Honorary Consulate-General does not issue Namibian visas — this is a limited honorary post — and is not part of the e-Services workflow. Australian travellers who prefer paper-based processing or have complex cases (longer-stay, work, study, research) liaise with the Namibian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, the closest resident mission, or use the e-Services portal directly. Diplomatic and Official Passport holders should approach the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and the Namibian Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation through diplomatic channels.
Consular Services
Australian-resident Namibian citizens can approach the Honorary Consul-General for first-line consular contact in genuine emergencies (loss or theft of Namibian passport, serious illness, accidents, coordination of repatriation, detention) and for introductory advice on civil-registration matters before being referred to the High Commission in Kuala Lumpur or the Ministry's online services. Full passport issuance, emergency travel documents, civil registration and apostille services are not performed in Sydney; these are handled by Kuala Lumpur or by direct application to the Ministry of Home Affairs in Namibia.
Trade & Export Support
The Honorary Consul-General supports Australia–Namibia commercial contacts on a non-commercial basis: introductions for Australian mining and exploration companies interested in Namibian uranium, copper, gold, lithium and rare earths; introductions for Namibian exporters seeking Australian buyers in beef, marine products and tourism services; and informal coordination with the Namibia-Australia Mining Association and Austrade missions visiting southern Africa. Major Australian listed-resource investors with Namibian projects — including those active around the Erongo uranium province — engage at chamber and trade-association level.
Cultural & Educational Programs
The Honorary Consul-General supports the Namibian diaspora community in Sydney, Melbourne and across Australia on Namibian National Day (21 March), Heroes' Day (26 August) and informal cultural events; provides referrals for Australian academics and students looking at southern African research collaborations; and engages with the African Studies Association of Australasia and the Pacific on Namibia-specific programming.

Honorary consular district: the Commonwealth of Australia. Australian states and territories (New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory) are all covered through Sydney. New Zealand is not within the Honorary Consulate-General's accreditation — New Zealand residents are referred to the Namibian High Commission in London, which is the closest resident Namibian mission with Commonwealth ties relevant to New Zealand citizens, or to direct Ministry of Home Affairs online services.
Appointment Information
All consular contact is by prior appointment. Australian travellers using the Visa on Arrival route do not need to contact the Honorary Consulate-General at all — the application is filed entirely through the Ministry of Home Affairs e-Services portal and the printed approval letter is presented at the Namibian port of entry. The Honorary Consul-General's diary is published through the consulate website and bookings are made by telephone or email through that channel.
Special Notes
The Honorary Consulate-General is a limited-authority post; it is not a substitute for a full diplomatic mission. Australian travellers and Australian-resident Namibian citizens with substantive consular matters (passport, full visa processing, civil registration, notarial acts) work either with the Namibian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur (the closest resident mission with full diplomatic accreditation) or directly with the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation in Windhoek. Direct flights between Australia and Windhoek do not exist; the standard long-haul routings from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth are via Doha on Qatar Airways or via Johannesburg on Qantas, South African Airways and Airlink with a final connection to Windhoek.
